Grindsploitation from the States, ready to fight
Grindcore, mostly too harsh for the masses, is a genre that on its own can be quite devastating, but combined with death metal, thrash metal - or both - is an even more lethal setup. Proven time and time again by bands like Frightmare and Ghoul, among many others, Brain Famine from Massachusetts, USA, take up the mantle of mosh-friendly grind with gusto and abrasive enthusiasm.
"Whoever said grindcore needs to sound like a garage band who sold their soundengineer for drugs should shut up,"
The explosive duo obviously know their grindcore. I'm guessing they've been listening to a lot of Carcass and Macabre, and their riffs, drums, vocals and sound are equally heavy, dynamic and gruesome. Whoever said grindcore needs to sound like a garage band who sold their soundengineer for drugs should shut up and put on Brain Famine's eponymous EP. With just six tracks on the EP you'd think that, given their predisposition to the teachings of the old school of grindcore, it'd be a short one. Au contraire! Brain Famine is a whopping 22 minutes in length, which is only a mere 7 minutes shorther than Slayer's thrash metal magnum opus Reign in Blood.
These 22 minutes are packed with layers upon layers of brutal riffing and destructive arrangements. The American duo shows a great understanding of flow and flair, and their EP is a promise of great things to come, touching upon what makes grindcore great and elaborating on a style that has already been explored. It's an EP that will find its way through the speakers time and time again for another round of fisticuffs.
