Bixiga 70 @ Atlas, Aarhus DK 18.02.2016

Colourful and seductive South American-styled Afrobeat that leaves you powerless to the rhythm
All over the world Brazilian ensemble Bixiga 70, named after the area in São Paulo from which they hail, have been saluted as one of Brazil's finest new bands. Their third album, "III" from 2015, brought them before new audiences, both in new listeners and a worldwide tour now in its conclusive stages ending in Copenhagen, Denmark, the 19th of February before a sold out venue.

Their odd Bossa Nova mix of latin jazz, folk, samba beats and traditional funky afrobeat makes them a standout act in itself, even on record. But witnessing their live performance, even this late on the tour, leaves you breathless. While each of the ten individuals in the band deliver and play extraordinarily well on their own, the band in unison is astounding. Bixiga 70's internal dynamic is close to unrivaled.

"With their set, which prominently featured several tracks from "III", the Brazilian group's vigor and enthusiasm had achieved an impressive turn-out,"

Fellow Danes will know just how hard it is to get Danish people to dance. In fact, we're known for our arms-crossed back-of-the-room attitude. But in spite of some minor sound difficulties early on in the set, which were quickly overcome, the small venue was practically reaching critical mass by the force of South American rhythms. With their set, which prominently featured several tracks from "III", the Brazilian group's vigor and enthusiasm had achieved an impressive turn-out, counting among the visitors young and old in equal amounts.

As the band's brass section swayed from side to side, so did the receptive audience. It was obvious from everywhere in the room, that Bixiga 70 enjoy what they do, and that the audience enjoy it too. Through three albums they've honed their craft to feature the perfect amount of soul, jazz, funk and South American elements, making it perhaps even more impressive live. The band did not only fill the small stage, but also reaching out to fill the entire venue in what will undoubtedly remain one of the most memorable gigs I have ever attended.

9/10
