Horrific: "Your Worst Nightmare"

Merely horrific by concept - Not by execution!
Good ol' Slasher Dave is arguably most well known in metal for his involvement with Detroit's deathly psychedoomia group Acid Witch, and secondly for his synthy 80s horror film soundtrack-inspired outings. But 2009 also saw him release a solo album under the pseudonym Horrific, with the title Your Worst Nightmare.

Dave's style on Your Worst Nightmare is heavily guitar driven, while it also stays true to his death metal roots. In essence it's a classic Razorback Recordings album, complete with trashy riffs, b-movie sound clips and horrific imagery. Aesthetically it plays like an 80s hard rock album played through a death metal filter.

"Your Worst Nightmare foresaw the shift in tone that brought Acid Witch out from their trippy witch cave in the psychedelic swamp"

Before Acid Witch's second album, Stoned from 2010, Your Worst Nightmare foresaw the shift in tone that brought Acid Witch out from their trippy witch cave in the psychedelic swamp - Witchtanic Hellucinations from 2008 - and into a faster, more groove oriented sound that they found later on, first on the Midnight Mass EP in 2010 and then distilling it into Stoned later that same year.

Horrific brings forth sleazy licks that are completely straight forward and unabashedly dumb, but oh so enjoyable. It's fast, but not without its slower passages (which sound a LOT like Midnight Mass-era Acid Witch, but without organ). At times it feels a bit juvenile, but the album remains highly agile and hard-hitting in all the right ways. There's nothing pretentious about it: Just straight up cool riffs in your face.

8/10

Released in 2009 by Razorback Recordings
