Abundant craftsmanship capable of great things
Some bands are so offendingly run of the mill that there's just not anything to be excited about. But some bands, while not as such adding any innovative elements, are just plain good at their craft. Finland's Pantheon of Blood belongs to the latter grouping, delving into the depths of black metal songstructure and creating music that may be straight forward, but enjoyable nonetheless.
Having only existed for 3 years before releasing this 2-track EP, "Consociatio Solis et Lunae" is an impressive feat to boot. Echoing the efforts of early Scandinavian bands, Pantheon of Blood epitomises several tropes of black metal with several tropes put together in these two well-composed tracks. Boreas' vocals are like an amalgam of all the greats of the genre, combining the rasps of early Satyricon with wailing Burzum-esque cries for variation, while Ishtara and Auroch's guitars provide an impenetrable cloak of drawn out expanses of distortion.

"Consociatio Solis et Lunae" doesn't meander despite prolonged sessions of distortion, but instead leaves plenty of room for sublime details..."
The great guitar work comes together with the mysteriously grim vocals and well-varied drums in a close to eight minute blast of genuinely good black metal. The cryptical sound that Pantheon of Blood has picked up so early in their musical carreer creates the perfect amount of gloomy atmosphere for the 2-song EP, transitioning smoothly between melodic riffs and more raw and abrasive sections. "Consociatio Solis et Lunae" doesn't meander despite prolonged sessions of distortion, but instead leaves plenty of room for sublime details that only add to the overall feeling of the EP.
Pantheon of Blood is definitely a strong contender within the hordes of black metal bands that are currently active. They stand out among other modern acts like Ash Borer and provide just enough character and flavour to loom above others.
